The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an initiative established by the Australian Government to improve support for Australians living with disabilities. The NDIS offers funding to Australians who have permanent, ongoing conditions that have an effect on their daily lives. This funding can be used to assist people in achieving some of their goals, such as employment, education and/or participation in social activities. How to apply

The first step is to complete an NDIS application. Starting your NDIS application is simple, to begin the process, you need to make an Access Request. You can do this in several ways:

  1.  Contact the NDIA by calling 1800 800 110 and request an Access Request Form which will then be mailed to you.
  2. Visit your nearest NDIA office or Local Area Coordinator and ask for an Access Request form.
  3. Make a verbal Access Request (over the phone) by calling the NDIA.

Once submitted your plan will be assessed within 30 days and if eligible for NDIS services it may take up to six weeks before your individualised plan begins.

Check your NDIS eligibility

The NDIS provides services and support to individuals with disabilities however you must meet the requirements first. There are many different disabilities and no two people with the same disability will have the same experience. The NDIS will determine if you are eligible based on a number of factors, these include:

  • You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities.
  • You must be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa or hold a Special Protected Category visa.
  • You must be under 65 years old at the time of applying.

What evidence do I need to be eligible?

When applying for the NDIS, we recommend you provide as clear information as possible about your disability and how it impacts your daily functioning. Ideally, the evidence you provide should detail your disability (including diagnosis, treatment and current symptoms) and show how it impacts you on a day to day basis. The NDIA will conduct an eligibility assessment to determine if you are eligible for the scheme.

Get an NDIS plan!

Once deemed eligible by the NDIS, all participants gain access to a personalised support package which includes funding for supports such as therapies, equipment and assistive technology that can improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities. NDIS Funding can cover expenses related to things like transport and travel costs associated with medical appointments, so it’s important to get this right from day one to ensure your plan meets your support needs.
